Time to fire up the BBQ

Time to fire up the BBQ

BY NATALIE DEANE

Spring is here and not only is the weather heating up, its time to fire up the barbecue!

There is no better way to spend a warm sunny day than having friends and family over for a cookout.

That’s why May is National Barbecue Month — an unofficial holiday and fun way to kick off the warmer weather.

Let’s face it everyone loves a good barbecue. After all, grilling outside is much more relaxed, it’s easier than being cooped up in a kitchen cooking all day, and you can play with the kids, catch up on the latest bestseller or suntan while your food is on the BBQ.

We all know nothing sours a barbecue party faster than a grill that takes too long to light, gives off a lot of smoke or cooks everything unevenly.  Don’t get caught with your tongs down! Before you start up your grill give it an annual check up.

BarbequePro (barbequepro.com) has been maintaining and cleaning BBQs for over 12 years.
Owner Charles Munro tells us: “After a long Canadian winter, there is nothing more important than cleaning your grill for the season. Before you throw your first burger on the grill, don’t forget about prepping your barbeque. Barbeque maintenance is the key to the longevity of your appliance.”
Much like any of your other appliances if you keep it in good repair it will last longer. For many of us a barbecue is a big investment especially if we want the latest and greatest.

Keeping your grills clean also reduces the amount of carcinogens and bacteria that means healthier, better tasting food for your family and friends. Calling a company like BarbequePro to come clean it up means no dirt on your hands and more grilling time. But for those who want to DIY here are some tips.

Gritty grill
That black charred coating on your grate isn’t adding flavour — it’s just dried up dirt and bacteria. Take your grill apart and chip off all the built up grime. Take the grates and soak them in some hot soapy water.  Once you have it cleaned off coat it with some oil.

Balanced burners
Once you’ve cleaned the grill its time to check the burners. Even heat is the holy grail of grilling. Light up the burners and see if the flame is even. Most burners need replacing every year or two depending on how much you use your BBQ. If you still have hot spots a great way to check is the toast test. Cover your grill with white bread and turn on the grill for a few minutes. Turn it off and check which slices got toasted!

Enhance the exterior
Before you set the BBQ a blaze make sure to inspect the entire appliance.  Replace any loose or broken parts. Check for holes or insects that may have created a home in or around your grill.
Most importantly check on the tubes, connections and the tank for possible gas leaks.

Maintenance is a must
To save yourself some of the elbow grease before next spring, keep up with your cleaning throughout the season. Don’t just burn off the BBQ. Turn the burners on high for five minutes.
Then scrub with a grill brush or a ball of foil. My favourite trick is to coat the grill with vinegar and water and let it soak while you enjoy your meal. Then when you go back the scrubbing is much easier.
By using these tips, your barbecue will be a sizzling success!
