Bring life to your outdoor space

Bring life to your outdoor space

Summer in Greenville means life is to be lived outdoors. A little time spent on decor now can make eating, relaxing and spending time with friends and family in your outdoor space even more memorable as summer continues.

Deidre Jordan, project manager at SH Designs, says a few items can make a world of difference.

"What makes you comfortable indoors?" Jordan asks. "Bring that to your outdoor space."

Rugs

Leave the wool indoors but choose a weather-resistant, easy-to-clean rug for your deck or porch.

"There are bright colors and fun patterns," Jordan says. "Geometrics are really popular right now. It makes it feel like an indoor space. It brightens up a space."

Because outdoor rugs are now a far cry from your mother's artificial turf, be sure to check the label to make sure the one you choose is designed for outdoor use.

Potted plants

Even if you are surrounded by trees and landscape, a few strategically placed plants can enhance the decor, just as they would inside.

"Have plants in colors — or do a mini-garden," Jordan says. "A lot of times it's nice because you have an area kids can work on and you can do as a family. Think about the sun. Ferns are a great choice and everybody loves them in South Carolina."

Lighting

Accent an outdoor space with some unexpected lighting sources. Solar-powered lights make it easy to add lamps, string lights or accent lights without rewiring.

"People don't think about lighting," Jordan says. "Those nice summer evenings you can stay out. Put lamps on your end tables if you can, but be sure everything is outdoor safe."

Comfortable furniture

There is no need to stick with traditional outdoor furniture, unless that's a design choice. New varieties make comfort as much of a priority as durability and function.

"Make sure your seats have nice cushions," Jordan says. "A lot of outdoor furniture isn't comfortable but if you are excited about your outdoor space, get some comfortable furniture."

Jordan suggests unexpected pieces, like an ottoman, to invite guests and sit and visit.

Pops of color

Sure, nature provides plenty of color throughout the summer, but you can add your favorites as well. Jordan said salmons and greens are trendy choices, but a classic is making a stand for 2015.

"A lot of colors are making a comeback," she says. "Ralph Lauren has made navy the new 'it' color."

Planters, throw pillows and accent pieces are the perfect way to add distinctive colors in ways that can be easily changed with the seasons. Look for outdoor fabrics that can withstand sun and rain.

Kid-friendly pieces

As a mom, Jordan is focused on making sure all ages can have a great time outdoors and stay safe. If little ones will enjoy your yard, think about how they will use it as you decorate. Instead of a stone or marble table, it may be wise to choose one that is a happy compromise.

"Make it a kid-friendly, cozy space," she says. "There are a lot of great seasoned wood tables that make the space cool and comfortable."

Bird baths and feeders

As you make your outdoor space more inviting for people, don't forget to invite feathered friends to visit as well. Bird baths and feeders care for wildlife, provide hours of entertainment and can easily double as art.

"There are a lot of great local men who do really nice feeders," Jordan says. "It gives you something to do when you are out there."
