Custom Built Storage Shed Versus Pre-Built

Custom Built Storage Shed Versus Pre-Built

One of the most difficult questions to answer is whether custom built or pre-built storage sheds are better. Everyone has their own take on which is a better option. A shed is a great addition to a backyard as they allow you to store gardening implements and surplus items that you want to store away. For many homeowners, it is a must-have as it is not only useful but can also increase the value of a home, even if it is by just a small percentage.

Which is better-custom built storage shed or pre-built storage shed?

Storage sheds are useful as they help you make sure that your outdoor area looks neat and tidy. No gardening tools or equipment are left strewn around and other items can also be safely stored in them. If you are planning to get a shed for your backyard, there are two options that you can get; custom built and pre-built or prefab sheds. Here are a few advantages and disadvantages of these two types:

Pre-built storage-shed pros and cons:

Pre-fab or pre built sheds are more popular among homeowners as they are more affordable. They are also easier to install and assemble while many of them manufactured by reputable companies are very well-made. However, they do have their drawbacks too.

The sizes available are limited and they are also not as durable as a custom built storage shed is. Another disadvantage of pre-fab sheds is that they are hard to maneuver so there are times when you will not be able to install them exactly where you want.  Not to mention the cheaper materials used to build them, which can play a factor in heavy wind and snow conditions.

Custom built storage shed-pros and cons:

Nowadays, custom-built sheds are quite rare but many homeowners still prefer them although they are considered quite old-fashioned. Their advantage over pre-fabs is that they are much more durable. They are sturdy and strong, not likely to collapse when strong winds blow or heavy snow falls. Custom-built sheds can last for decades if they are properly installed with quality materials and well maintained.

Installation considerations

A custom built storage shed is more difficult to install since they do not come with separate components that can be easily assembled. Everything needs to be built from scratch. They are also more expensive as wood and other items need to be bought and you also have to take the cost of manual labor into account. Time is another factor, as pre-fab sheds can be installed in hours as opposed to days or weeks.

Both types of sheds have their own pros and cons. If you are planning to get one, make a choice by taking your requirements and budget into consideration before you make a purchase.
