Want more outdoor space? Try a patio!

Want more outdoor space? Try a patio!

Want more usable space in your yard?

A patio offers a place to visit, eat, relax, entertain and more.

“Patios are great at providing an additional space in your yard,” said Kim Bush, nursery manager/landscape designer at That Perennial Place, in Morris.

Wondering about the difference between a patio and a deck?  A patio is located directly on the ground, while a deck is raised off the ground. A patio is usually made of stone, tile, or brick, while decks are made of wood or a wood composite.

Because it’s flat on the ground and made of more durable material, a patio is ideal for an outdoor kitchen where you can incorporate a fire pit or built-in barbecue.

“You can make the size as large or as small as you want, just make sure it is the appropriate size for the purpose you want it to serve,” Bush cautioned. For an outdoor dining area, make sure it’s large enough for your table and chairs.

Also, make sure you place your outdoor dining patio close to your back door so you don’t have far to cart your food and dishes.

“You can install a patio anywhere you have the room in the landscape, next to an existing deck to create a larger entertaining space or even in an existing landscape bed to create an outdoor room,” Bush said.

A patio can also fit in perfectly with an in-ground pool, providing a spot to bask in the sun before or after a swim.

Again, planning is key. Make sure your outdoor room is large enough to hold furniture like chairs, couches and loungers.

The landscape experts at That Perennial Place can help you plan and create a patio  that will provide years of beauty and service for your outdoor living space.
