‘Made in America’ comeback gets help from L.A., Walmart, Martha Stewart

Inside the Torrance factory of Bradshaw Kirchofer, carpenters are transforming straw-colored pine into reproductions of old English farmhouse bedroom furniture. One worker hammers a nail into the top of a bedside table, while another sprays a dark stain on a spindled canopy bed from the new St. Andrews Collection, which gets its name from the university where Prince William and Kate met.

Classic English furniture made by American workers. In America.

That carries a lot of clout with folks, and businesses have taken note. Witness the patriotic images and heartwarming tropes in a TV commercialfor Walmart, which plans to buy an additional $50 billion in American goods over the next decade and, in turn, drive more manufacturing jobs to the U.S. Martha Stewart spent the summer urging people to vote for their favorite American “maker” in the leadup to the company’s 2nd annual American Made Awards held in New York last month. And more and more, “Made in USA” — or some variation thereof — is showing up on things other than automobiles and products made of wool, fur and textiles (as mandated by the Federal Trade Commission).

“It’s obvious that this is something that has a lot of interest around it, and it’s being embraced in small towns and large cities and across the country,” said Meesha Haddad, general manager of editorial operations for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. “We hear it anecdotally as our editors are talking to makers and shop owners. Also, there is a group of people coming up who really want to learn how to make stuff with their hands. It’s part of how we live now.”

In Southern California, a number of artisan shops have been manufacturing American goods for decades.

Among them is Bradshaw Kirchofer, which has been quietly handcrafting furniture based on the well-worn pieces its founder Ann Bradshaw Kirchofer grew up loving and collecting.
