Creating An Outdoor Living Space
By Denise Freese
Making the most of your outdoor living area requires a design strategy. Similar to crafting a bedroom, living room, or other indoor space, it’s important to take stock of what you have, decide what to sell or give away, develop a budget, and visualize the intended final result. Outdoor spaces are similar to indoor spaces when considering layout and color, but have additional concerns such as lighting, weather, privacy, and a need for shade.
A good layout requires natural walkways between furniture pieces. Conversation and eating areas should complement each other, and space should be reserved for a grill or an outdoor fireplace.
Finishing touches include adding layers, textures, artwork, and plants in varying heights to provide visual interest. Rugs, pillows, trellises with climbing vines, a hammock, and other accessories can add color and make a big impact. A fountain creates soothing water sounds, and vintage items will add eclectic elements to your space.
For lighting, lanterns with candles create a soft, romantic glow. If outlets are available, strings of electric lights add a festive vibe. Create privacy by planting trees or shrubs around the area’s perimeter. If the space has a roof, install a curtain rod with flowing curtains that can be opened or closed as desired. Lattice walls offer privacy but still let in light and a breeze, and can be complemented by colorful plantings.
If shade is a concern, a triangular sail, a large umbrella, or installation of a pergola are options to consider. Weather resistant wicker, cushions, rugs, pillows, and artwork are preferable, due to their low maintenance.
